Journey to Acceptance
Throughout the book, Esperanza struggles with accepting herself. By having Esperanza struggle with this in The House on Mango Street, Sanda Cisneros teachs us that sometimes we have insecurities about ourselves that we cannot always get past them. However, we must learn to push past them and accept ourselves the way God created us.
Cisneros also teaches us that we may not be able to change how we look, but we are able to change how we feel. Esperanza feels ugly and trapped. Although she can not change her appearance, she can change how she lives her life, which is why Esperanza feels that the best way to change is to leave Mango Street.
I chose the picture of a pathway because I feel that it symbolizes Esperanza's journey to acceptance. It also symbolizes her journey towards a new place besides Mango Street.
